Supplies You’ll Need:
Setups may vary, but generally you’ll want to pick up the following from the store well in advance before buying your goldfish:
- Tank
- Hood w/ fluorescent light
- Power strip
- Tank stand/stable place to keep it
- Goldfish food and care products
- Aquarium filter
- Gravel siphon
- Thermometer
- Air stone
- Airline tubing
- Buckets (for water changes, etc)
- Aquarium gravel/sand
- Ornaments and plants
- Freshwater test kits
Different types of goldfish vary in some of their needsfancy goldfish need 20 gallons for the first and 10 gallons for each additional; so 2 fancy goldfish need 30 gallons. Common and Comet goldfish also know as feeder fish (the kind usually won at fairs) need 20 gallons each minimum, two fish means you need 40 gallons if not more
goldfish should never live in a bowl or anything small and unfiltered
Water changes should be done weekly or 25% or more
goldfish need alot of oxygen so water movement is preferable, an air stone and pump will provide extra water movement, add more oxygen to the water, provide entertainment and look nice
- Goldfish should not be kept in a tropical tank
- They should be fed small amounts of food at a time, make sure fish meal is the first ingredient and has a high crude protein percentage of around 30%
- They have a memory of at least 3 months and can learn tricks and will recognize you
- Changes in behavior are often signs of illness. Floating, clamped fins and bottom sitting should be watched out for
